Carbon Monoxide
Every year people die from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been properly installed or maintained. Many others also suffer ill health. When gas does not burn properly, as with other fuels such as coal, wood or oil, excess CO is produced which is poisonous. You can't see it, taste it or smell it but CO can kill without warning in just a matter of hours.
Corgi
CORGI was founded in 1970 as the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers, and was given the task of ensuring that gas work was carried out safely. Registration is a legal requirement for businesses and self-employed people working on gas fittings or appliances. All Coventry HVCA members re CORGI-registered in respect of gas-fired installations. Gas Safety Certificate
If you live in rented accommodation, insist on seeing your landlord's gas safety certificate, which shows that the appliances he owns have been checked for safety by a CORGI registered installer. All Coventry HVCA members re CORGI-registered in respect of gas-fired installations. Your landlord is legally obliged to provide you with written proof of these checks.
Gas Safety Regulations
CORGI registration is a legal requirement for businesses and self-employed people working on gas fittings or appliances. All Coventry HVCA members are CORGI-registered in respect of gas-fired installations.
Gas Safety Training
When gas is used correctly and with respect it is a safe and economical fuel. However - as with any area of expertise - people working with gas need to have the appropriate training and experience. CORGI-registered installers have to undergo at least the minimum requirement of training before they are accepted on to the CORGI register. Most have significantly more training. The training and assessments that registered gas installers have are not only about the technical know-how of specific appliances but also about safety. All assessments have to be renewed every five years in order to keep installers up to date with ever-changing standards and regulations and to keep their knowledge fresh. All Coventry HVCA members are CORGI-registered in respect of gas-fired installations.
Landlord Safety Certificate
Landlords have a legal duty to maintain all appliances and flues, which you have provided for your tenants to use and have them checked for safety at least once every 12 months by a CORGI registered installer.

The Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association (HVCA) is the officially recognised organisation representing central heating contractors. It exists to promote fair dealing, professional service and high installation standards, and offers customers the reassurance of a job well done. The Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association (HVCA) offers a unique Double Guarantee scheme. When installing or upgrading domestic central heating, most reputable installers provide the householder with a comprehensive 12-month guarantee covering workmanship, materials and performance - and HVCA members are no exception. Only HVCA members also offer the extra protection - automatically and at no extra cost - of the unique HVCA Double Guarantee scheme. If an HVCA member fails to honour his obligations under the guarantee, the HVCA will step in and meet the costs of putting things right. If an HVCA member should go out of business while carrying out an installation, the HVCA will honour that members guarantee and arrange for the installation to be completed.
